Super easy homemade oat milk recipe

Oat milk is THE most sustainable milk (or should I say mylk) that you can buy right now in terms of water and land use. If you don’t believe me, check out this recent BBC News article where they break down the environmental impact of cows milk compared to rice, soy, oat and almond.

If you can make your own, even better. There is something really satisfying about starting with a handful of oats and seconds later having fresh milk for your cereal, smoothie or coffee!

Because of this, I want to share with you this super easy, cheap and adaptable oat milk recipe. If you’re lucky enough to have a zero waste shop near you then wonderful, if not Tesco and Waitrose (and other supermarkets?) have Flahavans Irish oats which come in a paper bag.

Have a play around and find what works for you – some people like it more creamy (add more oats), some like to add a little salt and sweetener (like maple syrup) but it’s really not necessary.

This is to make 700ml as that’s the size of the old tomato sauce bottle I use to store it in, but again play with the quantities to fit your needs.

Ingredients:

700ml water (filtered, if possible)
35g oats
Very small pinch salt (optional)
Small dash maple syrup (optional)

Directions:

  1. Add everything into a blender and blend on a high speed for about 20 seconds
  2. Pour through a sieve (I do this over a measuring jug) to separate out the oats
  3. Pour the oat milk into a container and store in the fridge up to 4 days. It’ll separate so you’ll need to give it a good shake before each use
  4. You can use the sieved out oats in oatmeal or to bake with etc so that it doesn’t go to waste
