Eco yoga mats – which one’s for you?
Eco yoga mats – which one’s for you?
As a yoga teacher who is passionate about helping people reduce their impact on the planet, I’m always being asked to recommend eco-friendly yoga mats. With this in mind, I’ve created a guide comparing the best eco-friendly mats on the market, so that you can easily find the right one for you 🙂
Why it’s important to have a good yoga mat
Having a good yoga mat is really essential for your practice, allowing you to work through the postures without worrying about slipping in downward-facing dog or feeling pain in your knees in table-top. It’s also nice to have a mat which is always used for your practice, even in group classes. There is a feeling of ‘coming home’ when you step on to it, allowing you to come into a relaxed, mindful state more easily.
The most sustainable options
If you already have a yoga mat then undoubtedly the most sustainable option for you is to continue using what you already have. However if you’re looking to get your first mat, or your current mat is worn out / just isn’t working for you then it’s great to be conscious of the environmental impact of what you’re buying, as you might do with anything else.
It’s also always worth searching for second hand yoga mats in a good condition, to give them a new lease of life and make sure they don’t end up in a landfill. Just give it a clean and you’ll be good to go. This is also a great option for anyone wanting to save a few pennies. Search online on Gumtree, Ebay, Preloved and take a look in your local charity shop.
The question of price
As with most things, more sustainable and environmentally friendly options tend to come with a higher price tag, and I am aware that a lot of the mats on this page aren’t cheap. It’s great if we’re able to support the brands who provide more planet friendly options, but I also understand that not everyone can afford to spend this much.
I’ve therefore included a really good, affordable yoga mat in the comparison table below (the Yogamatters Sticky Yoga Mat) which isn’t as eco-friendly but a solid option for those on a smaller budget. PVC can be recycled at the end of its life, but needs to be taken to a specialist recycling center.
I’m also very happy to have partnered up with DIYogi to offer my readers 10% off their yoga mats (see the below table for all the mat details) using the code LIVING10 at their checkout. DIYogi mats are also available on Amazon and can be bought with the same discount code.
Finding the eco-friendly mat for you
There are many yoga mats on the market, which makes finding a mat which is grippy, has good cushioning and great eco credentials a big task! But I’ve done all the research, reading 100s of reviews and testing mats out myself where I can, to make this decision as simple as possible for you.
I’ve also focused on grip and thickness of the mats, as they play a big role in how focused and comfortable you will feel whilst practicing yoga, making sure you get the maximum benefits from your practice.
